Bishop Amooti asked Christians to deeply understand the purpose of commemorating the genocide

The Senior Pastor of the Diocese of Kigali in the Anglican Church, Bishop Nathan Amooti Rusengo reminded Christians that they should value and deeply understand the meaning of commemorating the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994.

Bishop  Amooti said this at a memorial service for former Anglican workers and other victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi in 1994, which was attended by Christians, friends, leaders of the church and the Vice President of Ibuka in Nyarugenge district, which took place on June 15, 2024 at the Cathédrale of Saint Etienne.

He said, "Remembering is an important thing for Christians because the Bible also reminds us to remember. Thus memory allows a person to look back, then prepare his ways for future times. We remember the bad things that happened but we also take measures to rebuild ourselves.

Reverend Maurice Clebeurt Rukimbira, who represented Kimironko Parish, asked the Christians who participated in this event to preach to people that Jesus not only heals sins but also heals wounds using the song in book 281 which contains this message, he added that it is precious to see Rwanda safe.

He said, “The first thing we are thankful for is that we survived. Getting from your home to the church was a challenge. When you see how safe it is, one can walk at any hour. when you see how the people who were injured are involved in giving life, and when you see the country that was dead and full of darkness has been resurrected, you feel that it is something to be proud of. ''

Murungi Espérance, who is among the survivors, said that she remembers how she fled to the Diocese of Kigali, thinking that she found refuge because she saw that there might be safety, bus she was surprised to find that there were also Interahamwe who were taking people out to be killed outside.

She comforted the survivors of the Genocide, thanking the Anglican Church, saying, "We thank the church, which remembers us, and helps us in remembering our lost  loved ones."

The Vice President of Ibuka in Nyarugenge, Nzitonda Mediatrice, warned the youth who participated in this event, encouraging them to confront and fight  those who despise the Genocide against the Tutsi.
